Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service has announced its compliance with a Brazilian Supreme Court order to block access to Musk’s social media platform, X, across the country.
According to The Hill, Starlink,
owned by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, confirmed its decision to restrict access to X in Brazil following the Supreme Court's mandate. The order stems from an ongoing dispute between Musk and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
Tensions between Musk and de Moraes have escalated for months, peaking when X shut down its Brazilian office after the court ordered the removal of specific posts. Non-compliance would have resulted in a $3,650 daily fine and the arrest of X's Brazilian representative, Rachel Nova Conceicao.
Last week, de Moraes escalated the situation, threatening to shut down X entirely in Brazil. Musk responded by calling the judge an "evil dictator cosplaying as a judge." In response, de Moraes ordered the immediate suspension of X, demanding that internet providers and app stores block the platform within five days. The ruling also imposed daily fines of nearly $9,000 for those attempting to bypass the ban using VPNs or similar methods.
Initially, Starlink attempted to challenge the ruling, deeming it illegal. However, under pressure from Brazil’s telecommunications regulator, Anatel, the company decided to comply with the court’s decision to avoid further sanctions.
