Liz Cheney Announces Support for Harris in Presidential Election

Liz Cheney Endorses Kamala Harris for President, Urges Swing State Voters to Follow Suit

Former Republican Representative Liz Cheney announced that she will vote for Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election, emphasizing the importance of her decision in key battleground states like North Carolina. Speaking at Duke University, Cheney expressed her belief that defeating Donald Trump should be the top priority for voters.

“I don’t believe we have the luxury of writing in candidates, particularly in swing states,”

Cheney said, underscoring the threat she believes Trump poses to democracy. She added that, as a conservative and a defender of the Constitution, her decision is rooted in her concerns about Trump’s influence.

Cheney’s announcement marks a significant break from her party, as she openly aligns herself with Harris. The Harris campaign highlighted Cheney’s support, alongside endorsements from other Republicans, including former Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger and former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan.

Harris Campaign Welcomes Liz Cheney’s Endorsement

"The Vice President is proud to have earned Congresswoman Cheney’s vote. She is a patriot who loves this country and puts our democracy and Constitution first,” said campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon in a statement following Cheney’s endorsement.

Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney and a consistent critic of Donald Trump, has been vocal about her mission to prevent Trump's return to the White House. Her opposition to Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election — including her vote to impeach him — led to her removal from her leadership role in the House Republican caucus.

Cheney later served as vice chair of the House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. In 2022, she lost her congressional seat in a primary challenge backed by Trump.

Despite her loss, Cheney continued her campaign to counter Trump’s influence. Her political action committee took out ads urging Arizona voters to reject Trump-aligned candidates, and she crossed party lines to support moderate Democrats in key House races during the 2022 midterms.
